Introduction to SSC CGL

The Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) examination is one of the most prestigious competitive exams in India for graduates. It recruits staff for various Group B and Group C posts in different ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India.

SSC CGL offers a wide range of government jobs with attractive pay scales, job security, and growth opportunities. The exam is conducted in four tiers (Tier-I, Tier-II, Tier-III, and Tier-IV) with different patterns for each stage.

Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

Candidate must be either:

  • A citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962, or
  • A person of Indian origin migrated from specified countries

Age Limit (As of 1st January of exam year)

  • Minimum Age: 18 years
  • Maximum Age: Varies by post (typically 30-32 years)
  • Age relaxation available for reserved categories as per government norms

Educational Qualification

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Some posts may require additional qualifications:

  • Statistical Investigator: Statistics as a subject in graduation
  • Junior Statistical Officer: Degree with Statistics/Maths/Economics
  • Accountant/Auditor: Commerce background preferred

  • Data Entry Speed Test (DEST): For Tax Assistant, etc. (2000 key depressions in 15 minutes)
  • Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): For Assistant Section Officer (ASO) – Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Generation of Slides

Preparation Strategy

General Tips

  • Understand the complete syllabus and exam pattern thoroughly
  • Create a realistic study plan covering all subjects
  • Focus on conceptual clarity rather than rote learning
  • Practice previous years’ question papers and mock tests
  • Work on time management and accuracy

Subject-wise Preparation

Quantitative Aptitude: Focus on arithmetic (percentage, profit-loss, ratio), algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data interpretation. Practice calculations to improve speed.

English Language: Improve vocabulary, grammar rules, reading comprehension, and writing skills. Read newspapers and quality literature regularly.

General Intelligence & Reasoning: Practice all types of reasoning questions – analogies, classifications, series, coding-decoding, etc.

General Awareness: Stay updated with current affairs (last 6-12 months). Focus on static GK (history, geography, polity, economy, science).

Important: For Tier-III descriptive paper, practice essay and letter writing regularly. Work on structure, coherence, and presentation.

  • Tier-I Exam: June-July
  • Tier-II Exam: November-December
  • Tier-III Exam: After Tier-II results
